Children & Family

We partner with families in raising children to know Christ and bring others to Him by loving one another, growing in faith, and serving others.

Weekly programs and highlighted events are listed below. If you’re interested in serving opportunities or how we staff our ministry, please see Church Volunteering or the “Safety & Security” section below. For any questions or more details, please contact Director of Children and Family Ministry Christa Middleton.

Children's Worship

Children’s Worship is offered year-round for children age 4–grade 1 during 9:00 a.m. Sunday Worship. Familes start together in the sanctuary, and after the children’s message, parents can check kids in outside the Praise & Plays room (they can also check in before worship). Children can be picked up after worship, or if they are staying for Sunday School, they can be picked up at 11:00 a.m.

Children’s Worship is not necessarily an “education” class but an age-appropriate service for kids that shows (rather than tells) the whys, hows, and whats of worship. We have adult and youth leaders start with a large-group activity or song of praise that continues into a multimodal Bible storytime. This is followed by a “wondering” time, allowing children to respond to God and verbalize His work in their lives. We conclude in a large group with a lit candle and the story read from Scripture, a prayer, and a departing blessing. There is an emphasis on the church seasons, namely Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost. Children’s Worship uses material developed by Sonja Stewart and Jerome Berryman, who were influenced by Maria Montessori.

Sunday School

Children who are 3 years old–grade 5 meet in the Praise & Plays room after worship for a snack, then split into age groups for a lesson and fun activities. Once a month, we have “Sunday School Sings” in the music room with Associate Worship Director Jenee O’Connor.

Students who attend Children’s Worship may stay in the Praise & Plays room through both programs. Children in grades 2–5 worship in the sanctuary with their families and then get checked in at the kiosk outside Praise & Plays . All children must be picked up at 11:00 a.m.

Midweek Events

Crossroads Station is two Wednesdays a month from 6:00–7:00 p.m., with creative, special activities for children and families. Crossroads Station is geared towards children in 4K through grade 5 and parents are encouraged to stay and join the fun! Younger children are also always welcome if a parent stays with them!

Wednesday night rehearsal for the Christmas musical begins in November, and March for the spring musical. Please see highlighted events and the downloadable calendar above for more details!

Milestones of Faith

We offer each of our seven Milestones once a year. Milestones are workshops for children to attend with their parents/caregivers with a chance to be recognized and/or participate in Sunday Worship. Each Milestone is targeted to a specific developmental age group, but any elementary-age child is welcome.

Childcare for younger siblings from 6 months old to 3 years old is available by request. When registration opens for Milestones, indicate during the sign-up process if you’ll need childcare.

Vacation Bible School

Each summer, the Crossroads family pools its talent and resources to provide a high-quality Vacation Bible School (VBS) experience for the children of Crossroads and the surrounding community. It’s a week full of music, outdoor game time, craft projects, and more! In 2026, VBS will be June 15-19, 9:00 a.m. to noon!

VBS is for children from 3K (must be potty trained) through grade 4. VBXtreme is for children in grades 5–6 during the current school year, who will meet up each day for team-building games and Bible time.

Adults can serve as Crew Leaders, Crew Assistants, and Kitchen Helpers. Youth in grades 7–12 can also volunteer as part of the Work Crew to serve as Crew Leaders, Musicians, Crafts or Games Helpers, and more. Registration and training details will be available in early spring!

MomCo

The MomCo offers mothers in all different stages and phases of motherhood a place to find friendship with other moms and experience the love of Jesus in a supportive and loving environment. 2025–26 registration opened on May 15 for current MomCo members and June 1 for the wider community.

Childcare is offered during meetings for children ages 6 months to 5 years. We are currently at capacity and have started a waitlist. If you need childcare to be able to attend, sign up and select the option ”Pay In-Person” so you can wait and see if we have space for your child. MomCo leaders will be in touch to let you know if we have space for your child.

Safety & Security

We are deeply concerned with the holistic safety of children at Crossroads. We require all staff and volunteers to have criminal background checks and pass a sexual abuse awareness training course provided by MinistrySafe. Strict physical and verbal boundaries are maintained; no child is ever left unsupervised with one adult.

First-time volunteers are asked to demonstrate a personal commitment to the church by being a member in good standing for a minimum of half a year, or by having a child enrolled and actively participating in a Crossroads program for at least one semester. Returning volunteers must renew their background check, re-familiarize themselves with our protection plan, and complete an online safety training every two years.

Along with robust accountability and reporting systems, staff and volunteers are required to be trained in first aid, CPR, and AED procedures, as well as carry two-way radios at all times. For a full account of our standards to protect minors, please review our Child Protection Policy. To read more about our building’s security, see our Facilities page.

Disease Prevention

If your child is ill, they should stay home. Parents should be on the alert for any COVID-19 or flu-like symptoms. A child or any household member who has any of the symptoms below are asked to stay home:

  • Fever reading of 100.4 or higher or a temperature over 98.6, along with subjective signs like flushed cheeks, fatigue, extreme fussiness, chills, shivering, sweating, achiness, headache, or not eating or drinking
  • Persistent cough unrelated to allergies
  • Diarrhea/loose stool
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Inflamed/pink eyes, excessive eye mucus
  • Runny/stuffy nose

Any child who is unwell will be asked to return home with the parent/caregiver. For those who become unwell during their time in childcare, a parent/caregiver will be contacted to come and pick up their child.
