“I promise to pray for and serve the people with energy, intelligence, imagination, and love.” These words resonated with me over two years ago when I began my Elder journey, and again most recently when we ordained a new slate of church officers. There is a lot packed into those four words: energy, intelligence, imagination, and love. Let me try to unpack them a bit…

When we have energy, we are charged to use it well. As an Elder, that means using it for the goodness of our church and all of its members. Being a part of the Church Life Ministry Team has offered endless opportunities to use my energy, like swinging a partner at the square dance, flipping pancakes at a church breakfast, leading a monthly team meeting. I like to think that expending this energy is 100% to the Glory of God!

“For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.” —Colossians 1:29

Serving as an Elder, attending Session meetings, discerning options, and decision-making requires intelligence, guided by wisdom and spiritual insight. Our monthly business meetings bring a wide variety of opinions to the table. Being an active listener has helped me understand others perspectives, allowing us to set goals, create plans, and solve problems together.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all.” —James 1:5

Our summer sermon series has had a focus on imagination. Endless possibilities arise when we allow our imaginations to soar. I find it fun to engage myself creatively while seeking out other’s ideas as well. Putting preexisting ideas and judgment aside to think outside of the box brings forth a myriad of fresh perspectives!

“Lord, stretch my imagination to see what You can do—beyond what I ask, dream or think. Help me use my creativity for your glory.” —Ephesians 3:20

Serving with love, as modeled by our Savior Jesus Christ, is primary to my daily living. As a Session, we strive to lead with a spirit of unity, listen well, and speak with kindness. We pray for each other, and our entire church, as we work together to serve Christ and his people—always with love and care.

“Let all that you do be done in love.” —1 Corinthians 16:14

In Christ,
