As I reflect on my first year as an Elder, I’m struck by how often God works through unexpected paths. When Carrie and I returned to Mequon four years ago, we quickly became involved at Crossroads—joining a new member class and the Pickleball group. I joined the choir and Church Life Ministry Team, helping to organize events like the Square Dance and Ice Cream after Summer Worship.

That first summer, Carrie and I joined a Small Group, something we hadn’t planned but were led to by the Holy Spirit. Now, three years later, we’re still part of the Gen X Small Group, and our involvement at Crossroads continues to grow. Though we weren’t seeking additional commitments, I was drawn to serve on one of the Compass SAI teams. I requested to join the Discipleship team, which resonated with me due to my previous experience in a formal Discipleship study. However, I was asked to join the Unity SAI team, an experience that deeply enriched my understanding of what it means to be united under Christ.

Around the same time as the SAI teams were winding down, the opportunity to be nominated as an Elder arose. I prayerfully considered it since I was inspired by my time in the Compass Unity SAI team. I knew each Elder serves on a Ministry Team, and while I had been involved with Church Life, I felt open to serve where there was the greatest need. And so I was appointed to the Adult Ed Ministry Team—a decision that, in hindsight, felt divinely aligned.

Serving as an Elder on the Adult Ed team has been incredibly rewarding. My involvement with Pickleball, Church Life, the Gen X Small Group, and the Compass Unity SAI team have come together beautifully with the team’s mission. This year, we experimented with training leaders for Small Groups, focusing on a well-rounded approach to discipleship that includes prayer, study, connection, and service.

As I reflect on my journey, I encourage each of you to keep your heart and mind open to God’s call. His guidance may come in unexpected ways, but with reflection you can see how it all fits together. My challenge to you is to engage in the life of Crossroads. Whether through a prayer group, bible study, small groups, or serving on the security team, there are countless ways to grow and serve. Start small, listen to the Holy Spirit, and watch how He leads you into new doors.
